What is Treatment-Resistant Depression?
Treatment-resistant depression describes a pattern in which symptoms remain burdensome despite one or more appropriate treatment attempts. It does not mean healing is out of reach. It usually means the treatment plan needs a closer review, more structure, or a different combination of therapies and medication collaboration.
Signs and symptoms
- persistent low mood or emotional numbness
- reduced motivation even with ongoing treatment
- sleep, appetite, and concentration problems that continue
- discouragement after partial improvement or relapse
How it can affect daily life
Many adults begin to doubt themselves when a first approach does not help enough. We work carefully to reduce shame, review what has and has not helped, and rebuild a plan that feels grounded and realistic.
Evidence-based treatment approaches
- behavioral activation with structured follow-through
- cognitive behavioral therapy focused on stuck patterns
- acceptance and commitment therapy for hopelessness and avoidance
- care coordination with psychiatry when medication review is appropriate
When to seek help
If you feel exhausted by repeated setbacks, are withdrawing more, or have trouble meeting daily responsibilities, it is worth asking for a more comprehensive plan.
